- What happens when I call the L.P.I. LawCALL legal service toll-free number?
From the automatic options offered, choose "Speak to a lawyer for free legal guidance". Based on the telephone area code you're calling from, your call is routed to a Legal Service Office in the Province where your call originates. The first person you will speak to will be the law firm's receptionist. Identify yourself as a Law Protection Inc. (L.P.I.) Member, quote your L.P.I. Membership number and tell the receptionist the nature of your question. You will either be transferred to a lawyer or asked to leave a message.
If a lawyer is not available at the time of your call, the lawyer will call you back as quickly as possible.
If your call is an emergency, please tell the receptionist.
After discussing your problem with the L.S.O. lawyer, you will be given options and then can make an informed decision as to whether you need further legal services.
- If I need more than telephone guidance, what should I do?
You have some choices:
1. Call L.P.I. and upgrade your L.P.I. LawCALL Plan to L.P.I. LawNET Plan, L.P.I. LawNET Premium Plan or L.P.I. LawNET Business Plan. This will allow you to enjoy savings of 25% to 60% off National Average Fees* for the services listed within each plan.
2. Consult a lawyer of your choice
3. Do nothing.
*National average fees are based on a combination of two national surveys of regular fees charged by lawyers; one by Canadian Lawyer magazine and one by L.P.I. of the lawyers in its legal network.
- What hours is the service available?
L.P.I. LawCALL service is available Canada-wide from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM local time, excluding weekends, national and local holidays.
For L.P.I. LawNET, L.P.I. LawNET Premium and L.P.I. LawNET Business , service is available from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM ET, excluding weekends, national and local holidays. Emergency Service is available after hours and on weekends through a separate toll-free number on the front of your L.P.I. Membership card.
- What happens if the lawyer is not available when I call?
We do our best to have a lawyer available at the time you call. From time to time this may not be possible. If you have to leave a message, your call will be returned as soon as possible, generally within one business day. Please state a number and what the best time to reach you is. Due to the confidential matter of your call, our lawyers do not leave voice messages unless instructed by you to do so. If you have an emergency, please tell the receptionist.
- Can family members use my membership?
Absolutely! Dependent family members include your spouse and your children up to the age of 19 and living at home (up to age 21 if still in school).

- Are there any other costs over and above the discounted fixed fees and hourly rates of my Membership?
The listed L.P.I. fixed fees and hourly rates are for the lawyer's time and do not include taxes, or any of the out-of-pocket expenses that may be incurred on your behalf by the lawyer. In some types of legal transactions, such as Real Estate transactions, there generally are "disbursements" to be paid. Always ask a lawyer whom you are considering engaging to give you a detailed estimate of potential expenses and fees.
If you retain an L.P.I. lawyer, he/she will invoice you directly. Lawyers customarily require a retainer before providing services to clients. This is paid to the lawyer "on account" when service begins and the full amount is credited against the total bill after service is provided. When retaining a lawyer the potential requirement for a retainer, and the amount, should be discussed before engaging the service.
- Are there any restrictions on my Law Protection Inc. Membership?
The plan may not be used against the plan sponsor (any organization through which you received the Law Protector Plan™ legal assistance plans), L.P.I., or for any matters regarding any collective agreement. While you may make any number of L.P.I. LawCALL free preliminary legal guidance calls, you can make only one call about each particular matter. The lawyer will explain your options to you and unless circumstances change, no additional calls about the same matter should be required.
There are some legal matters which may be too complex and/or time consuming to qualify for the preferred legal rates offered in the Law Protector Plan™. In this event, the L.P.I. lawyer will let the Member know in advance.
- How do L.P.I.'s legal assistance Plans compare with the competition?
To the best of our knowledge, the Law Protector Plan™ :
- is much more affordable than any other comparable Canadian legal assistance plans;
- offers Members "listed fixed fee" services which other Canadian providers do not;
- offers Members the most affordable hourly rate legal fees available; and
- has the most extensive Canada-wide network of experienced, community-based lawyers working on your behalf.
- What do I do if I'm having trouble with the lawyer or think I'm not being treated fairly?
Call our L.P.I. administrative office at 416-920-9777 or 1-866-660-6628 and tell us what the problem is. We'll clarify misunderstandings and liaise between you and the lawyer. As a plan Member, you have the benefit of dealing with lawyers who have been pre-selected by L.P.I. and who have agreed to set terms. Problems are few but when they do arise they are generally quickly resolved to everyone's satisfaction.
It is also great to hear the good testimonials from your experience.
