Things you need to Know
Facts about our pre-paid legal services in Canada
- Dependent family Members are covered under your L.P.I. Plan. This includes the Member's spouse and children up to the age of 19 and living at home (up to age 21 if still in school).
- Regular service hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm local time in each time zone excluding national and local holidays. For emergencies after-hours and on weekends there is a separate toll-free number.
- L.P.I. fixed fees and preferred hourly rates do not include taxes or out-of-pocket expenses incurred by your lawyer on your behalf. Ask the lawyer if there are standard expenses (or "disbursements") associated with your type of legal issue.
- L.P.I. legal fees set out in the plans are subject to periodic review and adjustment.
- If you retain an L.P.I. lawyer, he/she will invoice you directly. Lawyers customarily require a retainer before providing services to clients. This is paid to the lawyer "on account" when service begins and the full amount is credited against the total bill after service is provided. When retaining a lawyer the potential requirement for a retainer, and the amount, should be discussed before requesting service.
- Service is provided in Canada by L.P.I.'s national network of community-based lawyers.
- The Law Protector Plan™ legal assistance plan may not be used against the sponsor (any sponsoring organization which provided the plan to you), or against L.P.I., or for any collective agreement matter.
- L.P.I. does not directly provide legal services. Rather, we're here to make the experience of hiring a lawyer easier, more affordable and less intimidating.
- L.P.I. administers the Plans and negotiates preferred legal fees for our Members with independent lawyers across Canada. L.P.I. is not responsible for any acts or omissions on the part of any law firm, lawyer, or similar professional providing legal services.
